Our first trip to Milan, Italy's Fashionably Historic Capital

When it comes to must-visit destinations in Italy, Milan is undoubtedly at the top of the list for those who enjoy shopping. Known as the fashion and design capital of the country, Milan seamlessly blends modernity with its rich historical heritage. In this blog post, we will explore three captivating experiences that should be on your itinerary when visiting Milan, including iconic landmarks, cultural treasures, and delectable delights.

Milan was our first Italian destination in Italy, so we were a little overwhelmed on arrival. However, seeing as its a city, many people speak English which is handy if you don't know much Italian. Italians are generally very friendly and helpful if they speak some English, usually they will help you with directions.

However, do be careful at places such as train stations and with street sellers. We had an unfortunate encounter with one who tried to sell us socks, and then cigarettes and then we refused he offered us cocaine. Eventually we paid him to leave us alone, by which time we were surrounded! Please don't get scammed. It was an unfortunate first experience in this grand city.

The train system is also a little bit confusing in Italy, if you don't have any experience with Italian trains, I would recommend visiting a ticket booth, and grabbing your ticket there, if you can find one. However, we easily found our first destination, once we figured out how to actually purchase a ticket from the ticket machines, inside the train station- it kind of reminds me of the tube in London.

Marvel at the Magnificent Duomo

No visit to Milan is complete without beholding the awe-inspiring beauty of the Duomo di Milano. This grand Gothic cathedral stands proudly at the heart of the city. The details are incredible and they offer tours inside. Take your time to admire the intricate details of its façade, and if you're feeling adventurous, climb to the rooftop for a breath taking panoramic views of Milano.

We were really quite stunned by the details of this cathedral, I think you could quite easily spend a day looking around if you enjoy architecture. We got on the yellow line at Centrale and go off at Duomo. It was pretty easy to find and the piazza that surrounds it is full of restaurants and shops.

Wander through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Indulge in a luxurious shopping experience like no other by strolling through the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Inspired by Renaissance architecture, this historic shopping mall showcases high-end boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. If you like designer shops then this place is a must!

Be sure to spin on the mosaic bull on the floor, under the dome for good luck. According to local legend if you spin on it three times you'll have good luck. John actually did some breakdancing on it, so maybe that's why we were chosen to be on a Place in the Sun!

Immerse Yourself in Art and Culture at the Pinacoteca di Brera

Art enthusiasts should not miss the opportunity to visit the Pinacoteca di Brera, an impressive art gallery housed in a former Jesuit college. Marvel at masterpieces by renowned Italian artists, such as Raphael, Caravaggio, and Titian. The gallery's collection spans centuries of artistic excellence and offers a captivating journey through Italy's rich cultural heritage.

As we were only there for one night, I didn't get to visit this place, but it's on the list of things to do the next time I find myself in Milan. Don't forget to indulge in some delicious food while you visit Milan. We had an authentic Carbonara to share and it was "Buenisimo!"
