We fell in love with Abruzzo, and we hope you will too! There are so many things to explore here, and seeing as John has just bought a property here, it seems that we will be travelling back to Abruzzo more and more! Of course, there are so many things I could share about this region. It's approximately a three hour coach journey from Rome, and it's well connected to the rest of Italy via train. With so much of the history and beauty relatively unknown to most, it really is hidden in the mystique of the Italian countryside.

Five Reasons why you should Visit Abruzzo!
The Unspoiled Natural Beauty
Abruzzo is a nature lover’s paradise. With nearly half of its territory comprised of national parks and protected areas, this region is home to an incredible biodiversity. The Majella National Park and Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park offer awe-inspiring mountain ranges, pristine lakes, and untouched wilderness. From hiking and skiing to wildlife watching, Abruzzo is an adventure waiting to happen.

It has Charming Hilltop Towns
The region is adorned with a myriad of enchanting hilltop towns, each possessing its unique charm. Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Civitella del Tronto, and Scanno are just a few examples of these hidden treasures. Stroll through winding cobblestone streets, explore medieval castles, and indulge in traditional gastronomy while immersing yourself in the authentic Italian culture.

The Rich History and the Stunning Architecture
Abruzzo’s historic heritage is an intriguing blend of various civilizations that have left their mark over the centuries. The region boasts well-preserved medieval castles, ancient Roman ruins, and stunning churches. The town of Sulmona for example, is famous for its beautiful Renaissance architecture and is the birthplace of the poet Ovid!

Taste the Culinary Delights
Abruzzo’s cuisine is a fusion of flavors and traditions. Delight in the region’s hearty dishes like arrosticini (grilled lamb skewers), maccheroni alla chitarra (homemade pasta), and succulent sheep’s milk cheese. Pair your meal with a glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, one of Italy’s celebrated red wines. Embrace the slow food philosophy and savour every bite.

The Warm Hospitality
While Abruzzo may be a hidden gem, its warmth and hospitality shine brightly. Locals welcome visitors with open arms, eager to share their traditions and stories. Whether you choose to stay in a family-run agriturismo, a quaint bed and breakfast, or a charming seaside hotel, expect to be treated like part of the family.
So there you have it, this is why Abruzzo is a destination that captures the essence of Italy – picturesque landscapes, rich history, delightful culinary experiences, and warm hospitality. As an unspoiled haven away from the bustling crowds, it offers a unique opportunity to slow down, immerse oneself in nature, and discover the true heart of the Italian spirit.
